Late at night near Chiba-Chūō Station, "21:00 Ice Chiba-Chūō Ekimae" draws people heading home from work, school, or an evening out, looking for one last small treat before the day ends. We sat down with the manager to hear how the shop got started, what he cares about most in how staff treat customers, and which item on the menu he'd recommend first.
— What made you want to open an ice cream shop?
I used to work at a hotel. I've always loved being around people, and working there taught me just how much joy good service can bring — to both the guest and the person providing it. Every day felt like a lesson in what it means to make someone's day a little better.
Before that, I actually spent two years at a hotel trade school near Chiba-Chūō Station. Back then, my friends and I used to talk about how nice it would be if the area had a relaxed, café-like place where people could slow down for a while.
Between my time at school and my years at the hotel, the idea of running a place of my own only grew stronger. I wanted to bring the same care I'd learned in hospitality into a shop I could call mine. That feeling is exactly why I opened this shop right here, in the neighborhood near Chiba-Chūō Station that means so much to me.
— What do you care about most in running the shop?
Service, above everything else. No matter how good the product is, people won't want to come back if the way they're treated doesn't feel warm. That belief shapes everything we do here.
So every staff member focuses on two simple things: always smile at the register, and always hand over the order with a smile. It sounds like such a small, obvious thing, but we honestly believe it's the most important part of the job.
There's one small house rule, too. If a customer has both hands full after buying two or more ice creams, a staff member walks over to the door and opens it for them. It only takes a few seconds, but it's something we keep doing because we want every single customer to leave feeling good, right up to the very last moment — it's a small touch that's become part of what makes this shop feel like ours.
— Any customer moments that have really stuck with you?
Honestly, just hearing "thank you" or "I'll be back" every single day already makes me happy. But there's one story in particular that I'll never forget.
A customer told me she'd been going to a hospital here in Chiba, and for a long time she used to dread those appointment days. But after she started stopping by our shop on the way home, something changed — she said she actually began looking forward to hospital days. On top of that, she told me, "The ice cream is delicious, and the staff are so kind, so I became a regular here."
Hearing that made me realize something important: this shop isn't just about selling ice cream. If we can turn even a small part of someone's difficult day into something they look forward to, that's the moment I feel proudest to be running this place.
— What's your own personal recommendation?
There are a lot of great options on the menu, but if I had to pick one, it's the "Luxury Nama Choco." Honestly, I think our soft serve itself is the best you'll find anywhere — and even within that lineup, this flavor is something special.
The reason is that we make the nama choco, or raw chocolate, entirely in-house. Every single batch is prepared carefully by our staff — smooth, rich, and made fresh, never store-bought. Paired with the soft serve, it becomes a cup you never get tired of, bite after bite, right to the end.
Making it isn't easy — it takes real time and care every day. But seeing a customer take a bite, smile, and say "this is delicious" makes it worth the effort every single time. I hope people get the chance to taste what handmade really means when they visit.
— Any final message for the people reading this?
To anyone who's made it this far, I'd love for you to come visit at least once. I'm genuinely confident in the taste of what we make, and our whole team works hard every day to make sure you leave glad that you stopped by.
And if you do enjoy your visit, we'd be truly grateful if you left us a review on Google. Good reviews mean a lot to the team and keep us motivated to keep improving — and of course, honest feedback for things we could do better is always welcome too. We take every comment seriously, and we're always working to become a shop that keeps getting a little bit better.
If you're ever near Chiba-Chūō Station at night and looking for a small moment of happiness, we'll be here waiting for you at 21:00 Ice Chiba-Chūō Ekimae.
